INSPECTIONscan Commissioned in Archives New Zealand

A 16mm film common in the Archive

Archives New Zealand Te Rua Mahara o te Kāwanatanga has acquired an INSPECTIONscan system for its film inspection work in Wellington!

The new INSPECTIONscan is to streamline the review of film holdings, create digital viewing copies and identify material at risk of deterioration. This supports informed decision-making regarding which films require closer attention.

On-site training was led by Cube-Tec’s product specialist, Fritz Jacob. Four staff members took part in the core sessions, with additional colleagues joining parts of the programme.

Fritz Jacob (Cube-Tec International) is delighted with his wonderful trip to New Zealand and the smooth installation:

We’ve been practicing how to use the INSPECTIONscan with recent footage, and I’m pleased to have learnt a bit about archiving work Down Under.”

The installation is in Te Rua the new national archives building which forms the Te Kahu heritage campus alongside the National Library of New Zealand Te Puna Mātauranga o Aotearoa. The building provides conservation and digitisation facilities for Archives New Zealand, the National Library of New Zealand and Ngā Taonga Sound & Vision.

Archives New Zealand’s audiovisual holdings include the National Film Unit (NFU) collection. The NFU produced films from 1941 to 1989, including the newsreel series Weekly Review and Pictorial Parade, as well as documentaries and instructional films. These provide a record of New Zealand’s people, places and changing society.
