Standardised MXF Gateway for German ARD Public TV Archives

IVZ goes for Cube-Tec MXF Legalizer to correct on a large-scale MXF format adulterations.

The Informations-Verarbeitungs-Zentrum (IVZ) in Berlin is a subsidiary of the German public service broadcasting authorities (ARD). IVZ supplies with their data centres the exclusive ARD wide archive services for the majority of the ARD broadcasters.

IVZ decided to purchase MXF Legalizer to provide a new service to examine all delivered MXF files on standard conformity and to correct them automatically if required, before the files are stored in the deep archive. In addition outgoing archive files can be corrected on demand. MXF Legalizer is used with the new German ARD/ZDF MXF profiles to ensure highest possible interoperability between all the connected public broadcast services.

IVZ placed the order for MXF Legalizer after an extensive testing phase which started already summer 2014. Now it is planned to build up a distributed MXF Legalizer system. The data throughput of this high availability system is planned to be about 10 TB of MXF files a day. The integration into the existing IBM AREMA system is based on the open FIMS interface standard.

IVZ runs two identical equipped data centres as multi-user systems at locations in Berlin and Leipzig. The systems receive randomly files for archiving from the connected ARD broadcast centres. In the background the two IVZ data centres synchronize the data holding automatically. In cases of failure or overload situations restores can be retrieved from either location.

With MXF Legalizer we can bring the very problematic format heterogeneity in the archive environment to an end. This way we are heading to the ARD network wide interoperability of MXF files. In addition we offer MXF check and repair options as a private cloud service for the whole ARD network hence we are able to provide QC at a very cost effective level for every partner.

With its intelligent repair capabilities MXF Legalizer has become the reference solution to secure interoperable and standard conform MXF files in an automatic way. With the provision of this flexible MXF correction service IVZ can now offer an attractive added value to their customer base on a large scale.
