BFI Expands Its INSPECTIONscan Installation

The British Film Institute (BFI National Archive) is the UK's leading organisation for preserving film and the moving image.

Since 2024, the BFI has relied on four INSPECTIONscan systems to support their film inspection and preservation workflows. In July 2026, the institute expanded this number by two additional film inspection systems, bringing the total to six.

Ensuring that the conservation team achieves the best possible results with the six INSPECTIONscan systems, an intensive five-day training course was recently completed successfully.

We co-designed the training with Jörg & Fritz from Cube-Tec to meet the different levels of experience held within the BFI's Film Conservation team. Jörg's practical on-site sessions provided an introductory session to new users, while more experienced users explored more complex processes. We supplemented this with self-led practice sessions which helped to embed what was learnt. Fritz's QCView sessions worked very well, designed as they were, to cover an introduction to QCView and a more advanced session exploring how to interpret the data and explore how to use it in conjunction with other software's. Personally, I was also fortunate enough to be able to spend time between sessions discussing the evolution and development of the INSPECTIONscan tables, which provided me with deeper appreciation of the use and capabilities.” - Elena Nepoti, Film conservation manager at BFI

As a cultural charity, the BFI supports film culture and education, as well as the preservation of audiovisual heritage. This includes the internationally significant collections of the BFI National Archive.” - Kieron Webb, Head of Conservation at BFI
